Why Gutters Block So Quickly in the Fenland
March and the wider Fenland area are characterised by flat, low-lying land with many mature trees lining residential streets — limes, sycamores, horse chestnuts and willows that drop enormous quantities of leaves each autumn. Combined with average annual rainfall well above the UK average, this makes the Fenland one of the worst areas in eastern England for gutter blockages.
A single autumn can fill gutters to capacity. And because the land is flat, there's no natural runoff advantage — blocked gutters have nowhere to drain and will overflow directly onto your walls.
The Best Time to Clear Gutters in March
The ideal time for gutter clearing in the March area is late November to early December — after the bulk of leaves have fallen but before the heaviest winter rains arrive. This gives you clean, free-flowing gutters for the wettest months of the year.
If you only do one gutter clear a year, this is the one to do. Properties with heavy leaf fall overhead, or those that suffered blockages last year, should consider a second clear in late spring (April–May) to deal with seed debris, moss and silt buildup.
What Happens If You Leave Blocked Gutters
A blocked gutter isn't just an inconvenience — it can cause serious, expensive damage:
- Damp and water ingress: Overflowing water runs down the exterior walls, saturating brickwork. In older Fenland properties this can penetrate quickly, causing interior damp and mould.
- Fascia and soffit rot: Constant moisture degrades wooden fascia boards, often requiring full replacement — a far more expensive job than an annual gutter clear.
- Foundation issues: In extreme cases, persistent overflow around the base of a property can saturate the ground and undermine foundations.
- Roof damage: Debris backed up against the roof edge causes water to sit under tiles, leading to leaks.
- Pest nesting: Blocked gutters full of wet leaf litter are a favourite nesting site for birds and insects.
What's Included in a DirtBGone Gutter Clean

- Full gutter channel clear — all leaves, moss, silt and debris removed
- Downpipe flush to confirm unobstructed drainage
- Visual inspection with any damage or loose fixings reported to you
- All debris bagged and removed from site

For most standard houses we use a SkyVac high-reach vacuum system, which allows us to clear gutters safely from ground level — no ladders required and no risk of ladder damage to your guttering.
